2012 IHSAA Football, Week 0

Believe it or not, Iowa’s 2012 high school football season kicked off last night. None of the local teams played — City High held its annual open scrimmage — but a handful of the Des Moines metro teams hit the gridiron, as did a number of the smaller schools across the state.

As mentioned each Week 0 since I returned to the Hawkeye State, I think this is way too early to start the high school football season. I have yet to hear a convincing reason — or any reason at all — why the school year and football season need to start so early. Football and August just do go well together for me.

Anyway. Though I have yet to see the schedule for any of the local schools, I will try to attend a game each Friday this fall. City High home games will be featured a lot and I hope I can visit West Branch’s Little Rose Bowl once again. I would also like to see another Clear Creek Amana game and maybe venture down to Lone Tree. Also, I have never been to a game at Kingston Stadium so I may follow the Little Hawks to Cedar Rapids when they battle one of the metro teams.
