Beer of the Weekend #376: Velvet Rooster

After deciding I did not want to drink any beer tonight, I remembered I have brews to sample. Grr.

The beer tonight is Velvet Rooster, brewed by the Tallgrass Brewing Company of Manhattan, Kansas.

Serving type: 16-ounce can. No freshness date.

Appearance: Served in a tulip. The color is hazy, light gold. Two fingers of off-white head took its time dissipating to a spotted lacing and sudsy ring around the edge.

Smell: Clean, grassy, and floral with clove spice and a hint of Belgian funkiness hanging in the background. It also has a vinous tinge of grapes and sweet apple.

Taste: Very smooth and well-balanced; everything from the smell blends perfectly. It is grassy and floral with a little clove spice, and the farmhouse funkiness is also noticeable. It also has an apple cider tartness and spicy bite.

Drinkability: Tommy likey. Tommy want (rooster) wingy. This is the best Tallgrass offering I have had so far (and probably the de facto best beer I have had from Kansas).

Fun facts about Velvet Rooster:

-Style: Tripel — despite the fact it is canned.

-Price: $2.99/can at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.

-Alcohol content: 8.5 percent ABV.

-Food pairings: BA recommends Mediterranean cuisine (perhaps a nice veggie pita from Oasis), sharp and pungent cheeses, pork, and poultry.

-According to the beer’s webpage, the inspiration for Velvet Rooster is a painting of a rooster, done in acrylic and velvet, that is on display at a bar called Auntie Mae’s Parlor.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
