Amid our national turmoil, I wonder if I need a haircut

Today I have crises on the brain. The federal government is shut down and on the verge of defaulting on its debt. The tiresome tinfoil hat brigade is loudly bemoaning the Affordable Care apocalypse. And I am pondering a haircut.

It’s been over four months; I last got my hair cut on May 21. I have waited longer than this — the longest I have let my hair grow, I believe, is six months (see my profile picture) — and I have every intention of going another month or two. But my hair does not look as well as I want. The waves are in full effect and the ends are beginning to curl outward, but the sides are starting to look thick and mangy. Some days are better than others and hats are becoming an issue. Perhaps it is just a phase and I need to be patient, but I am getting annoyed.

Though I like the length and want to let it grow a little longer, I am not keen on having my hair “shaped up” to tame it for the time being. I doubt I have never had that done, but, regardless, if I am going to pay $20 for a haircut I am going to get my money’s worth. I am getting shorn.

Hmm… Should I?

I have been meaning to get my passport forever and would like to apply this fall. (I really do not need a passport because I have no plans to travel abroad anytime soon. But it is something I would like to get for the hell of it, just to say I have it.) For my picture, I would like to have short hair. However, I do not plan to have photos taken for a while and may as well let my hair grow for another month or so. (Plus, I am sure the passport office is closed while the government is shut down.)

Well, that’s settled. Sometimes I need to write to make up my mind, to figure out how I feel and think. If only Congress could be just as frank, open-minded, and efficient about decision making.
