Beer of the Weekend #639: Slope Style Winter IPA

The beer tonight is Slope Style Winter IPA, brewed by the Boulder Beer Company of Boulder, Colorado.

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. The “ENJOY BY” date printed on the shoulder is “FEB122015.”

Appearance: Pours a medium to deep red, with some tones of brown. Two fingers of dense, tan, buttery head dissipates slowly and unevenly, leaving a lot of lacing stuck to the glass.

Smell: Ooo! The first whiff is a very enticing balance of malt and hop citrus. Toasted malt and caramel are in play, but scents of grapefruit, pineapple, earthy hops, and pine really shine. There are also hints of cocoa and dark fruit.

Taste: The mouthfeel is thick and chewy. I better take notes quickly before I finish the pint. Flavors of earthy hops and toasted malt are most prominent at first. The grapefruit, pineapple, and pine from the smell slowly creep in.

Drinkability: And in a flash…it’s gone! Though Boulder has never impressed me with their label designs (they are not my style), their beer has always been very pleasing. Slope Style Winter IPA included. This is very tasty and drinkable stuff.

Fun facts SSWIPA:

-Style: IPA.

-Price: $1.79/bottle at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

-Alcohol content: 6.4 percent ABV.

-SSWIPA was introduced this fall.

-Maybe I’m perverted, but slope style sounds a like sexual position.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
