Beer of the Weekend #628: Lagunitas Sucks

The beer of the weekend (or at least tonight) is Lagunitas Sucks, brewed by the Lagunitas Brewing Company of Petaluma, California.

Serving type: 32-ounce bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Served in a pint glass. The color is clear, medium gold. Two fingers of dense, eggshell-colored head settled slowly.

Smell: Light and citrusy. Scents of pineapple, kiwi, floral hops, orange, lemon zest, rye, and caramel.

Taste: Really tasty stuff. It is mostly citrusy, but it has a solid, sweet, malt base. Gritty hop bitterness, orange, lemon, less pineapple than there is in the aroma, a touch of cattiness, caramel malt, rye, and a hint of alcohol.

Drinkability: This definitely does not suck. I had no clue what to expect from this one, but it is a very pleasant surprise. It is something I will enjoy more often.

Fun facts about Lagunitas Sucks:

-Style: It is classified on BA as “American Double / Imperial IPA.” I think it would be more like an imperial pale ale.

-Price: $6.99/bottle at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City.

-Alcohol content: 8 percent ABV is written on the bottle, but 7.85 percent ABV is written on the beer’s webpage.

-According to the beer’s webpage, Lagunitas Sucks was, “Originally brewed in 2011 as a Brown Shugga’ substitute, due to construction-induced capacity issues. But we liked it so much it had to make a return trip.”

The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
