Beer of the Weekend #630: Free State Winter Fest

The beer tonight is Winter Fest, brewed by the Free State Brewing Company of Lawrence, Kansas.

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. The “BEST BY” notches on the back label are at “3” and “Week 1.”

Appearance: The beer pours a medium amber into a pint glass. A finger of dense, buttery, eggshell-colored head settles slowly and leaves spots of foam and bubbles, a ring around the edge, and a short trail of lacing along the glass.

Smell: Mmm… Deliciously enticing with pineapple, grapefruit, orange, kiwi, and floral hops. It is a touch sweet, too, with caramel and cherry licorice.

Taste: The flavor delivers what the aroma teases. The floral hops are most prominent and are complemented by pineapple, kiwi, orange, a little grapefruit, and caramel.

Drinkability: This is a solid brew. I do not necessarily think IPA is a fitting winter style, but it is still pretty tasty stuff regardless of the season.
