Beer of the Weekend #497: Classique

To all my fellow Hawkeye fans attending tomorrow’s game (which is technically today, I guess): stay hydrated with water. Alcohol will dehydrate you. Go Hawks!

The beer this very hot weekend is Classique, brewed by Stillwater Artisanal Ales of Baltimore, Maryland.

Serving type: 12-ounce can. It looks like a packaging date is printed on the bottom of the can but it is very hard to make out. I think it is “08/06/2013.”

Appearance: Poured into a tulip. The color is very hazy, light gold. For a second I thought it had a pink tint. Two fingers of dense, white head dissipated slowly to leave lacing along the glass, a spotted skim, and a ring around the edge.

Smell: Very saison-like with moderate doses of funk and spice. The Brett funk is not as intensely farmhouse-esque as other versions of the style and I can appreciate that. Pepper spice tickles the nose hairs and there is a hint of citrus underneath.

Taste: Very straightforward and mostly mirrors the smell: Brett funk, pepper spice, and lemon zest.

Drinkability: It is tasty and drinkable, but for $12/sixer I expect much more.

Fun facts about Classique:

-Style: It is classified on BA as “Saison / Farmhouse Ale.” Written on the can is “postmodern beer” — whatever that means.

-Price: $11.99/sixer at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City.

-Alcohol content: 4.5 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
