Beer of the Weekend #489: Golden Ale

Another night, another beer — but this time I am doing it for work. My LV recommendation is due Monday.

The beer tonight is a little something I spotted for the first time today: Golden Ale, brewed by the Great River Brewery of Davenport, Iowa.

Serving type: 12-ounce can. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is pale straw with a light haze. About a finger of white head developed but settled quickly to leave an even skim of fine bubbles.

Smell: Adjunct grain, probably corn. At first it smells like a macro pilsner with a decent amount of lemon citrus. As it continues to warm, though, it becomes more reminiscent of radler. Kind of; the macro experience remains, though.

Taste: Really light but flavorful. Adjunct grains, some pale malts, a nice bitter bite, perhaps a touch of spice, apple, and a little banana. The lemon citrus is also noticeable, but it is not as prominent as in the aroma.

Drinkability: Great River wanted something that was crisp, clean, and light, and Golden Ale fits that bill for them. I cannot say it is memorable, though.

Fun facts about Golden Ale:

-Style: It is classified on RateBeer as “Golden Ale/Blond Ale.”

-Price: $1.99/can at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

-Alcohol content: 4.8 percent ABV.

-IBU: 25.

-Also on RateBeer is this “commercial description”:

The newest addition to our Small Batch Series releases, the Golden Ale is our attempt to fill a whole in our inventory: a light-tasting beer. Unwilling to give up our desire to create beers with character, we chose a Belgian-style Gold Ale. The result is a crisp, clean, light beer with an unforgettable taste.

Like I said, it is not that memorable.

-Oh, and for whatever reason the North Liberty centennial celebration logo is printed on the can. Go figure.
