The Novel Diary: Week 45

Word count: 40,082.

Instead of editing my long essay tonight, I had a lovely and seemingly impromptu Millennial Thanksgiving Chez Bobblehead. A good time was had by all, including Sasha Grey.

Page by page, I have been making line edits to the essay. A lot of cutting and tightening is in order. It is almost shocking how entire sections lose their emotional significance when I realize how little they contribute. In previous edits I worked with the passages or features that did not completely fit, but now there is no saving them. They will now fall victim to the wrath of the “delete” button.

Sometimes you need to destroy something you love to make it better. In a nutshell, that, my friends, is the spirit of editing.

Needless to say, my novel outlining plans have fallen by the wayside. My December 4 restart date is less than two weeks away, and I wonder if I should bump it back to the day after the BCS National Championship. I do not want to do it — my break will have lasted over four months by then — but it may be necessary given the wonderful distraction of college football and the upcoming holiday season. I do not want to restart without a comprehensive outline. I will give it a lot of thought this week and will hopefully have a verdict by next Monday.
