The Novel Diary: Week 44

Word count: 40,082.

Ugh… I forgot about my long essay.

Actually, I did not. I remembered it at the last minute on Wednesday and printed it out; I read it for the first time in a long time on Thursday. My first impression: it needs more work. Lots of cutting and tightening are in order — yet again. [Sigh.] If I still have yet to polish a 10,000-word essay to my liking three years after finishing it, I do not even want to think about how long it will take me to edit and rewrite my novel. The proposition alone is scary.

Instead of marking edits tonight I attended the Hawkeye men’s basketball victory against North Carolina A&T. Tomorrow night, however, I will start my second read of the essay with pen in hand. As for the novel? I will try not to forget it. I have printed the list of interesting things from my previous outlines and will use that to start a new, chapter-by-chapter (I swear) outline.
