The Novel Diary: Week 30

Word counts: 4,737 (Chapter 6); 35,344 (total).

Softball season drags on and on. The regular season ended last week with the double-header in the heat, and yesterday we began the post-season tournament. A tournament for what? I have no clue. Probably a shitty trophy, since we are the trophy generation. (“Don’t feel bad about finishing twelfth, Little Billy. Here’s a trophy for participating. Everyone’s a winner!”) As the second-to-last seed, I assumed we would be easily dispensed with by the third-seed. Not. We pounded their asses, 11-2. So we will play another game next Sunday, and I will not write on Sunday yet again.

(Frankly, I could write next Sunday despite the late game. But laziness has been the theme of my writing effort thus far. Plus, if our season ends next week I think frosty beverages will be consumed with my teammates.)

After a week off to settle into my new apartment, and am back at it. It went well. With my window open, the crickets, cicadas, and fire engines rushing down Burlington Street provided an inspiring soundtrack. I wrote a lot of dialogue tonight, which is fine. One needs dialogue — important and propulsive dialogue — to break up the otherwise monotonous exposition.

When the first draft of Chapter 6 is finished, I am thinking about taking a short break to focus on the nonfiction piece I have had lying around, collecting dust, for a while. A friend gave me some constructive criticism way back in March and I need to take another look. The piece is massive — close to or perhaps over 10,000 words — so I doubt if it is publishable. But I will need to look around. I also need to figure out what the hell I will do in Chapter 7.
