Beer of the Weekend #268: Hacker-Pschorr Weisse Dark

Instead of guzzling another 40 of macro swill for this edition of BotW, I decided to put the Great Adjunct Adventure on hiatus while I explore some new wheat beers. The beer this weekend is Hacker-Pschorr Weisse Dark, brewed by the Hacker-Pschorr Brewery of Munich, Germany.


On BA it is called “Hacker-Pschorr Dunkle Weisse.” That is probably what it is known as in Germany, so I decided to go with what was on the label.

Serving type: Six 330 ml bottles. In the bottom right corner of the front label is a blue box with “05/12.” I assume that is the best-by date.

Appearance: Poured into a 300 ml weizen glass. The color is a cloudy, deep caramel. Two fingers of eggshell/slightly tanned head dissipated slowly to leave a thick ring around the edge and a thin lacing.

Smell: All the hallmarks of a dunkelweizen: the fruits (ripe banana and apple), the yeast, the cloves, the bread, the bubblegum, and a little caramel and cocoa to make it dark.

Taste: Orgasmic, and the definition of the style. It brings the usual hefeweizen qualities from the aroma (banana, apple, bubblegum, yeast, bread, and spice), and also offers toasted malts, which offer caramel, toffee, and cocoa.

Drinkability: Yowza. This is an incredible brew. I think this may be one of the best dunkelweizens I have ever had.

-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.

-Alcohol content: 5.3 percent ABV.

-Food pairings: Bavarian fare, nutty cheeses (Asiago, Colby, Parmesan), and salmon.


The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
