Beer of the Weekend #740: Molotov Lite
Tonight I opened up a can of Molotov Lite, brewed by Evil Twin Brewing of Stratford, Connecticut.
Molotov Lite pours a lightly hazy, deepish old. Two fingers of fluffy, buttery, eggshell-colored head dissipates slowly, leaving a bubbly skim and ring around the edge. Small chunks of protein hover in the beer, which is makes me suspect that this can is not the freshest. It has a pleasing but muted citrus aroma. There are scents of grapefruit, pineapple, kiwi, and astringent lemon zest. It portends booze but is not overly alcoholic, but the flavor does have quite a bit of booze up front. It is, as those who drink that adult grape juice like to say, “hot.” (I learned that term today. It is, I will say, fitting — especially for this beer.) It provides heat and sting along with flavors of lemon astringency, grapefruit, and tropical fruit. A lot more protein finds its way into the glass when I pour in the remaining beer. Thankfully, the booze becomes less prominent as the beer warms. The citrus flavors don’t necessarily become more prominent but they are much more noticeable. The alcohol leaves its mark on the tail of each sip, though. Booze and citrus — that’s basically what it is. I’m not impressed. The beer mellows and becomes enjoyable after about an hour out of the fridge.
Fun facts about Molotov Lite:
• Style: Imperial IPA.
• Price: $2.49 per 16-ounce can at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City.
• Alcohol content: 8.5 percent ABV.
• Calories: 250.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
