Beer of the Weekend #1,147: Zumwalt

The first beer of the weekend of 2026 is a style I have not had in a long time—and seemingly the only reasonably priced dark beer at John’s that I have not tried yet (in the walk-in cooler, at least): Zumwalt, brewed by the More Brewing Company of Villa Park, Illinois. Serving type: 16-ounce can. There is no freshness date. Appearance: Pours a mostly opaque black into my snifter. A tan, bubbly, buttery head fizzles away and leaves a broken skim and thick collar. It seems very effervescent for a porter.  Smell: Oooo! It has been a while since I had something like this. Dark fruit (probably plum), raisin, molasses, dark chocolate, caramel, and a touch of coffee. It is not much roast, surprisingly. Taste: Delicious and surprisingly thick and creamy (I expected it to be thinner given the fizzy head). Dark malt, but it is not overly roasted or bitter.
