Beer of the Weekend #723: Lovely, Dark and Deep
The beer tonight is Lovely, Dark and Deep, brewed by the Brewery Ommegang of Cooperstown, New York.
Unlike Scythe and Sickle, I am pretty sure Lovely, Dark and Deep was brewed recently. The beer was introduced on Ommegang’s official blog in October.
The color is what looks like opaque black. I held it to a lamp and no light passed through (though I am using a snifter, which makes a difference). A finger-width or so of dense, tan head leaves a bubble-spotted skim and a ring around the edge. The aroma is a pleasing, intriguing, and roast-tinged bouquet of dark chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Oatmeal creaminess is also present. Compared to the aroma, though, the flavor disappoints. The flavors are distant and taste watered down. The mouthfeel is not rich and creamy, as I would expect with an oatmeal stout. The roasted character predominates and the other flavors take a back seat.
