Beer of the Weekend #734: Coconut Abbey

The beer tonight is Coconut Abbey, brewed by the Kalona Brewing Company of Kalona, Iowa.

Coconut Abbey pours a golden amber color into a tulip glass. A finger-width of eggshell-colored foam leaves a skim and ring around the edge. It has that Kalona smell (I assume it’s the yeast). Underneath it is fruity bubblegum, which fades after a few minutes and gives way to coconut shavings, reminiscent of those sprinkled on holiday desserts or used in candy bars. The fruit then makes a return, which gives the beer a dark berry element. I like it. The flavor is boozy and warm; it has that warming sensation reminiscent of liquor, like vodka. Other than that, though, there really is not much to the flavor except light caramel. A hint of fruit is noticeable, but there isn’t much. I do not get any coconut.

Fun facts about Coconut Abbey:

• Style: Kalona calls it “Belgian Style Abbey Ale.”

• Price: $2.29 per 12-ounce can at the “Drug Town” on First Avenue in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 9.2 percent ABV.

• IBU: 18.6.

The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
