Beer of the Weekend #548: Alamo Golden Ale

My cousin moved back from San Antonio last week and I helped him unload the U-Haul he rented. My very generous payment: one of the custom sixers he brought back from the Lone Star State.

The beer tonight is Alamo Golden Ale, brewed by the Alamo Beer Company of San Antonio, Texas (Real Ale Brewing Company of Blanco, Texas is written on the label, though).

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. “03.12.14” is the “BEST IF CONSUMED BY THIS DATE” printed on the back label.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is hazy, light gold. A finger of fizzy, white head did not stick around for very long, leaving a skim and thin ring around the edge.

Smell: Crisp and clean. Pale malts, Saaz hop grassiness, which makes it smell like a helles or Czech pilsner, and light lemon citrus. There may be a little wheat, too. It is reminiscent of light summer ale.

Taste: Light, malty, and much like a summer ale. Pale malts, a little wheat gives it body, a touch of Saaz grassiness, and a dash of lemon. Earthy hops give it a light, earthy, metallic tinge.

Drinkability: It’s snowing. The high tomorrow will be in the single digits. This is not the beer for season, but it is decent stuff. It is light, refreshing, and offers decent flavor.

Fun facts about AGA:

-Style: It is classified on BA as “American Blonde Ale.”

-Price: Unloading a U-Haul trailer — in the snow.

-Alcohol content: BA pegs the ABV at 5.1 percent.

The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
