Beer of the Weekend #498: Day Tripper
I have two beers left from my last Minnesota haul and I need to drink them this week; they have been sitting in my fridge for way too long. They will conveniently lead up to BotW #500, which is still undecided.
The beer tonight is Day Tripper, brewed by the Indeed Brewing Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. No freshness date.
Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is hazy amber with a caramel tint. A finger of eggshell-colored, buttery head left a solid skim on the top and a thick ring around the edge.
Smell: It offers a nice dose of citrus and a little tropical fruit: grapefruit, tangerine, mango, and maybe a touch of pineapple. Underneath is a nice malt foundation, too: lightly toasted malts, caramel, and toffee. Pine resin and a touch of cattiness emerge late.
Taste: The bitterness is on the strong side for a pale ale and the flavors are very aggressive. It is relatively catty for a pale ale, too, but I like it. Tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, and orange peel. The malt base from the aroma is also present: lightly toasted malts, caramel, and a little toffee. The tail offers pine resin and catty pungency, which linger on the taste buds along with the lightly bitter bite.
Drinkability: This is a solid brew that offers a lot of flavor. Though not necessarily a “trip,” it is pretty aggressive for a pale ale.
