Beer of the Weekend #481: Baaad Boy Black Wheat

The beer tonight represents the last of my Wisconsin haul: Baaad Boy Black Wheat, brewed by the 3 Sheeps Brewing Company of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a 300 ml weizen glass. The color, as promised by the beer’s webpage, truly is darker than some porters: it looks black but may be very deep brown. When held to a lamp (I have never done that with a wheat beer!) it becomes a dark cherry color. Two fingers of tan, buttery head dissipated fairly quickly, leaving a bubbly skim and ring around the edge.

Smell: The aroma is very smooth and reminiscent of oatmeal stout. It offers a pleasant blend of dark chocolate, roasted malts, oat-like grain (probably wheat — duh!), a little molasses, and black raspberry.

Taste: The mouthfeel is not as creamy as oatmeal stout, but it does offer much of the same flavor. The roasted bitterness is kept at a minimum until the aftertaste, when it lingers on the taste buds. Dark chocolate, wheat, maybe some caramel or toffee, and a hint of black and cherry licorice.

Drinkability: This is good stuff and I bet it is superb on tap. I think I have a reason to visit Sheboygan now.

Fun facts about Baaad Sheep Black Wheat:

-Style: The brewery calls it “Black Wheat,” of course, while BA pretentiously calls it “American Dark Wheat Ale.”

-Price: $1.69/bottle at Otto’s Elm Grove Liquor in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.

-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.

-Alcohol content: 5.5 percent ABV.

-IBU: 13.

-The beer’s webpage features this interesting description:

Jane: I thought you ordered a wheat beer?

John: I did.

Jane: What do you mean? That beer is darker than some porters, that’s not a wheat beer!

John: Yes it is.

Jane: You’re a liar! My mom was right, this relationship is over!

John: Yes. It is.

Don’t be fooled like Jane: this is, in fact, a wheat beer. Beneath its rich, dark exterior and cascading head, you will find a classic unfiltered wheat presentation fused with the smooth, roasty, chocolate-like characteristics of the dark wheat malt. With a finish this unnervingly smooth, you're going to want to give this Baaad Boy a second chance...and third...and so on.

-Since my Wisconsin haul is gone, I think it is finally time to mosey on over to the Hy-Vee in Moline and grab some beers unavailable in Iowa.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
