Hot off the Press: Hemingway weeps edition
And now there's another oil spill, this time in Michigan: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/29/us/29michigan.html?_r=1&ref=us. Since moving back to IC, this is why I walk as much as I can, so I don't keep supporting this shit.
Money has been approved for the final engineering and design of a suicide deterrent/net on the Golden Gate Bridge: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/29/us/29bridge.html?ref=us. I'm not so sure what I think about this. Having marveled at the bridge up close and driven across it, I think I'm one of those in favor of leaving it as it is. It sucks that it is used as a diving platform for suicide.
The Anti-Defamation League has labeled the swastika a "universal" symbol of hate: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/29/us/29hate.html.
An interesting CRG article about the affect of the Lake Delhi dam failure on the Maquoketa River aquatic life: http://gazetteonline.com/top-story/2010/07/29/dam-failure-changes-conditions-for-maquoketa-river-wildlife.
The Four Corners Monument is closed due to construction, but many tourists, some who travel thousands of miles to see it, don't know that and arrive very disappointed: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/30/us/30corners.html?_r=1&ref=us. Embarrassingly, my parents and I were among those poorly informed tourists, but we just kept driving to Cortez. Plus, the monument closes at 5 or 5:30 (I can't remember which), so it would have been closed when we go there anyway.
A CRG article about Iowa's Socialist Workers Party candidates vying for election in November: http://gazetteonline.com/blogs/covering-iowa-politics/2010/07/29/socialist-workers-party-fields-iowa-candidates. This reminds me: I'll be voting here in November, so I need to register to vote and get educated about the candidates.
Lawmakers in Catalonia voted to ban bullfighting from the region affective January 1, 2012: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/29/world/europe/29spain.html?_r=1&scp=7&sq=bull%20fighting&st=cse. Hemingway is weeping. Let him cry.
