Beer of the Weekend #1,125: Summer Soother

The beer of the weekend last weekend was a summer-themed brewed that honors Iowa’s favorite all-natural and homegrown bug spray: Summer Soother, brewed by the Lion Bridge Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Summer Soother

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED ON 6/9/25” was printed on the bottom. Fresh!

Appearance: Poured into a nonic pint glass. The color was light, slightly hazy gold. Big, billowy, off-white head dissipated slowly and unevenly, leaving a lots of trails.

Smell: Not like the bug spray, thankfully! Light lemon, vanilla, light malt, and a touch of marshmallows.

Taste: Light with citrus and vanilla. Lemon, light malt, vanilla, and a tough of caramel. It was smooth and had a nice, earthy bite.

Fun facts about Summer Soother:

• Style: Lion Bridge calls it “ale for outdoors.” I can’t pin it down to a specific style.

• Price: $12.99 for a four-pack of 12-ounce cans at the Lion Bridge Brewery Company taproom in Cedar Rapids.

• Alcohol content: 6 percent ABV.

• The beer is a collaboration between Lion Bridge and Bug Soother, an Iowa-based bug repellant. I think it started small, but now it is everywhere and unavoidable.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
