Beer of the Weekend #1,028: Des Moines Challenge IPA

The fam got me three disc golf discs for Father’s Day. With a nine-hole course close to my house and driver, mid-range, and putt and approach discs, I no longer have an excuse to watch longingly instead of play. (I played the informal course at City High a lot back in the day and really enjoyed it, though I used an ultimate disc back then. I don’t have much experience with disc golf discs and have a lot to learn.)

Fittingly, the beer I drank last night pays homage to the Des Moines Challenge disc golf tournament: Des Moines Challenge IPA, brewed by the ReUnion Brewery of Coralville, Iowa.

Des Moines Challenge IPA

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED 06/06/23” is printed on the bottom shoulder.

Appearance: Poured into a nonic. The color is lightly hazy medium gold. A finger and a half of off-white, buttery, bubbly head dissipates slowly and evenly, leaving trails of foam.

Smell: Light and crisp as promised. There are light scents of grapefruit, orange, and a touch of lemon. Sticky pineapple is also in the mix.

Taste: Light, crisp, and smooth. It has a nice, subtle bite; not too much but it lets you know it’s there. Earthy hops, light citrus (though nothing stands out). It is a good beer for outdoor activity. The bitterness lingers on the taste buds long after each sip.

Fun facts about Des Moines Challenge IPA:

• Style: IPA.

• Price: $12.99 for a six-pack at Benz Beverage Depot in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

• Alcohol content: 4.5 percent ABV.

• I have always referred to disc golf and ultimate as frisbee golf and ultimate frisbee. However, both sports officially avoid using
frisbee because the word is a registered trademark.

David Wiggins Jr. holds the records for farthest thrown disc at 1,108.92 feet. That is a long way to throw a disc! (Note, though, that “[a]t the time of David’s throw, the wind was whipping at 38-42 mph.” That definitely helped.) I bet my first driver throw on Sunday was 20 feet.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
