Beer of the Weekend #1,001: Skelenaut

The Foxy Lady bought me a membership to The Local’s beer club for Christmas. One of the perks is a quarterly 12-pack of seasonal releases from Iowa breweries. I picked up mine about two weeks ago and the 12 brews have been sitting patiently in my basement fridge, so it is time to start drinking them.

But first, I need to try a beer I bought a month ago: Skelenaut, brewed by the ReUnion Brewery of Coralville, Iowa.

Skelenaut

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. “CANNED 11:28:22” is printed on the bottom shoulder.

Appearance: Poured into a nonick pint glass. The color is almost-opaque black; it has a ruby tint when held to light. A finger of tan, bubble-spotted, buttery head settles slowly and evenly.

Smell: I get cocoa, toasted malt, a hint of black licorice, burnt sugar, cinnamon, oatmeal, and raisins.

Taste: It tastes like a spicy oatmeal raisin cookie. Cinnamon is prominent, driving the spiciness, and there are flavors of raisin, oatmeal, maybe nutmeg (it has a Christmas/holiday element, though that could all be because of the cinnamon), cocoa, burnt sugar, hints of toasted malt, and vanilla.

Fun facts about Skelenaut:

• Style: It is classified on BA as American stout.

• Price: $12.99 for a sixer of 12-ounce cans at John’s Grocery.

• Alcohol content: 6 percent ABV.

• Here is the description via the can and brewery website:

We starred into the void of space. Mesmerized by the vastness of infinity and when we awoke we were holding cookies! Armfulls! Where did they come from? Enjoy this dark and roasty American Stout with oatmeal, raisins, cinnamon, vanilla and lactose. The signature beer of ReUnion Brewery's artist Jon Sims!

• Among the items sold in Jon Sims’s shop is a book called Terrible Flags of Cedar Rapids.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
