Beer of the Weekend #575: Sucha Much

BotW is back! Though we thought about camping, Mervgotti and I decided to take this weekend off. Well, he wanted to take it off and I did not object. It’s a pity, too, because it is a nice night and my new sleeping bag arrived this week.

The beer of the weekend is my LV beer of the month: Sucha Much, brewed by the Kalona Brewing Company of Kalona, Iowa.

I did not take a picture when I wrote my LV review so I am technically re-reviewing. It’s all good because it’s good drinking!

Serving type: 12-ounce can. No freshness date. Previously, Kalona brews were offered in 32-ounce “mini-growlers,” but the brewery started canning a couple beers recently. I was told at John’s that cans of Sucha Much hit the shelves for the first time today.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is lightish amber with a ton of carbonation rising from the bottom. A finger of dense, white foam leaves an even skim and thicker ring around the edge.

Smell: Über catty at first, but it thankfully fades and the aroma becomes deliciously enticing. It is citrusy with tons of tropical fruit and pale malt. Pineapple, mango, and kiwi dominate and are backed by orange, grapefruit, and pine. A solid malt base counterbalances the tropical fruit and citrus.

Taste: The first sip is very bitter, though it mellows considerably as the taste buds adjust with subsequent sips. The flavor mostly mirrors the smell; though they are not prominent at first, the tropical fruits gradually rise to prominence. Pineapple, mango, kiwi, grapefruit, orange, pale malts, floral hops, pine, and a pleasing bitterness that lingers on the tongue after each sip. There is just a hint of alcohol, but perhaps that is my imagination.

Drinkability: This is a very unique IPA. It is balanced, yet very aggressive at the same time. Very tasty and well-brewed stuff.
