Beer of the Weekend #455: Stiegl Radler (Grapefruit)

This is one of Hotek’s recommendations: Stiegl Radler (Grapefruit), brewed by the Stieglbrauerei zu Salzburg GmbH of Salzburg, Austria.

Serving type: 330 ml bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. Not much head develops, but there is a thin, bubbly lacing and decent ring around the edge. The color is cloudy, light straw.

Smell: Strong and invigorating citrus — much like a freshly sliced grapefruit! The lemonade or lemon soda is also noticeable and becomes much more prominent as the pint warms. It definitely has a much more soda-like aroma.

Taste: Much like Squirt (or at least from what I can remember). The citrus is strong and very tasty. The lemonade/lemon soda quality takes over and grapefruit is almost nowhere to be seen except for hints in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is exactly what I would expect from a lemonade and 7-Up/Sprite mix.

Drinkability: Call me crazy, but I really like this stuff. It is very simple and straightforward, but it packs a powerful punch in terms of aromatics and flavor.

Fun facts about SR(G):

-Style: BA classifies it as “Fruit/Vegetable Beer.” Technically, I would consider it “Radler,” which, according to Wikipedia, is “a 50:50 or 60:40 mixture of beer and German-style lemonade (not American-style lemonade, but sparkling lemon soda (e.g., Sprite or 7 Up)).” The term “Radler” is German for “cyclist,” which, also according to Wikipedia, “refers to its reputation as popular sports drink.” The beer’s webpage even features a laughing couple on a bicycle.

-Price: $1.99/bottle at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

-Serving temperature: 40-45ºF.

-Alcohol content: 2.5 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
