Beer of the Weekend #356: Innstadt Pilsener

The beer tonight is the pilsner brother of last night’s brew: Innstadt Pilsener, brewed by the Innstadt Brauerei of Passau, Germany.

Serving type: 500 ml bottle. There are cryptic notches on the back label but nothing discernable as a freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. The color is light lemonade with a little haze. Two fingers of thick, eggshell-colored foam dissipated slowly to leave a frothy cap and trails along the glass.

Smell: Light malts, grassy hops, a touch of lemon. It is pretty standard. There is a very subtle skunkiness but it is well hidden.

Taste: The mouthfeel is pretty dry and the grassy hops offer a nice, bitter bite. Pale malts and a little lemon round it out. The overall effect is a grassy crispness.

Drinkability: It is a classic pilsner. Crisp, tasty, and clean.

Fun facts about Innstadt Pilsener:

-Style: BA classifies it as “German Pilsener.”

-Price: Knowing the right people. (I will say, though, that I did not find at John’s today.)

-Serving temperature: 40-45ºF. The back label suggests to “Store cool and dark,” which is no help.

-Alcohol content: 5 percent ABV.

-Food pairings: BA recommends German and Japanese cuisine (though not Italian; catch my drift?), peppery cheeses, poultry, and fish.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
