C-Y-Cy, you ain't got no alibi...you ugly!

I’m counting down the days until August 28th — the opening night for college football season.

Oh, sacred game!

Just think: It’s almost been seven months since the national championship game, the last real football to be played. (The NFL? Give me a break.) I don’t know about you, but I’m going into football deficiency. Preseason games in that pro league will have to sustain me for the next four weeks because baseball ain’t cuttin’ anymore.

I got to thinking about this when I was running tonight: Iowa State’s new helmet design.

Somehow I stumbled on it online about a month ago. I noticed the different logo and thought it was a mistake. Iowa State has the Cy cyclone with “ISU.” This new symbol was probably some shitty, alternate, athletic department logo, perhaps for the cross-country team or something. But after a little research I found out that, yes, the “I State” logo is the new emblem for ISU’s athletic department and will appear on the football helmets as part of a complete redesign of the Cyclones’ jersey.

The new home uniform has been changed to this:

And here are the two road options:

U-G-L-Y.

To be fair, though, it’s not bad. The logo is very similar to the one used by the University of Idaho, and the new jerseys are snappy and traditional. Kind of high schoolish, though.

I bleed Hawkeye black and gold, so whatever Iowa State does with its image shouldn’t concern me, but I am a little vexed. The word “State” superimposed over a block “I” doesn’t say Iowa State to me. Everyone in Iowa says “ISU.” I doubt I’ve ever heard anyone refer to it as “I State.”

The best part about it is this: Fans were given three options to vote for online, and ISU athletic director Jaime Pollard had this to say about the results at the coming-out party:

“More than 35,000 people voted for their preference on cyclones.com and the clear choice was the ‘Iowa State’ mark… The winning margin for the logo was in double figures (percentage wise) in our online poll.”

Wow. Only 35,000 people voted. A true testament to Iowa State’s fan base. (I’m sure if the Hawkeyes were to redesign their helmets about 400,000 would vote.) If I had voted, I would have chosen the cursive “Cyclones.” Old school.

Anyway, if you’re interested The Helmet Project is an online archive of football helmet designs — college, pro, and even Canadian — dating from 1960. Each team has it’s own section. It’s pretty cool. Jerseys and logos have always been an interest of mine so I had a good time browsing the list.
