Beer of the Weekend #1,121: Sombrero Weather
The beer of the weekend is a weeks-late homage to Cino de Mayo: Sombrero Weather, brewed by Tellurian Brewing of Charles City, Iowa.
I have been mixing tenses in my reviews for years (usually past to present), so let’s stick with one and see how it goes.
Serving type: 16-ounce can. No freshness date.
Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. The color was a clean, clear gold. A dense, bubbly, off-white head settled slowly and left foam stuck to the glass.
Smell: It reminded me of a Mexican restaurant. Lime was prominent. Corn adjunct and light malt were noticeable. It was somewhat reminiscent of a margarita.
Taste: Ooo … tasty! The flavor did not have as much lime, which I was thankful for. Light lime, light malt (which gives it a pilsner-like flavor), and that Mexican edge (which made it taste like tequila). It was light and crushable. The edge faded as the beer warmed. It was bready and left a slight bitterness with a citrus edge.
Fun facts about Sombrero Weather:
• Style: Mexican lager.
• Price: $11.99 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans. (I have also been mixing number styles within sentences, spelling numbers under 10 but using numbers for those over. I should be more consistent with that.)
• Alcohol content: 5 percent ABV.
• I did not know Charles City had a brewery. Thinking about it now, I doubt I have ever been in Charles City other than to drive through it before the 218 bypass was opened. Bobblehead and I took a trip to Minneapolis in early 2002 when the Avenue of the Saints was still a mix of four- and two-lane highways north of the Waterloo area, and I vaguely remember driving through the middle of either Waverly or Charles City instead of around it.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
