Beer of the Weekend #1,120: Floyds Deluxe
The beer last weekend reminded me of how much I love 16-ounce cans: Floyds Deluxe, brewed by 3 Floyds Brewing of Munster, Indiana.
Serving type: 16-ounce can. “PKGD ON 03/14/25” is printed on the bottom.
Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. It was very foamy; an explosive, off-white, dense, and bubbly head settles slowly. The color is clean, clear gold that leaned light.
Smell: Light and lager-like. Very simple. Light malt (maybe rice?), light zest, a hint of hops.
Taste: Dry with light adjuncts. It is like a lighter, less sharp Sapporo. Light bready malt, white bread, a touch of yeast, a touch of hops. There is not a lot going on but it is good and crushable.
Fun facts about Floyds Deluxe:
• Style: The brewery calls it “lighter-style lager.”
• Price: $6.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.
• Alcohol content: 4.5 percent ABV.
• I kept getting rice in the aroma and flavor, but the beer’s webpage says it is brewed using “Indiana corn grits.”
• Among the things I would track with an Excel BotW “masterlist” is price per ounce. I would divide the price by the total ounces I purchased. Floyds Deluxe is about 11 cents per ounce. It’s not quite the 7 cents per ounce I paid for a sixer of 16-ounce PBR Extras last summer, but pretty good. (I honestly don’t know for sure, which is one reason I want to track it.)
• I love 16-ounce cans. I don’t know why. There is just something sexy about them. Those four more ounces do it for me.
• Speaking about cans, the Floyds Deluxe cans looked bigger than 16-ounces. Is it the gold color? The stripes? The Foxy Lady noticed it, too.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
