Beer of the Weekend #1,118: Crispy Lager
Oh, Canada.
I was in Vancouver for the annual conference a few weeks ago. Despite working a lot, I was able to explore the city and sample some of its liquid bread. I ventured out to a liquor store one night and grabbed a couple packs. I wanted to get more later, but it didn’t happen.
The first beer in a disappointingly small haul from Rain City is Crispy Lager, brewed by the Who Cares Brewing Company of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Serving type: 355 ml can. There is no freshness date.
Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. It is a light, very clear gold. A fizzy head dissipates fairly quickly, leaving a bubbly, spotted skim.
Smell: Lots of adjunct malt. Rice, light malt, light lemon zest, a touch of hops.
Taste: Light and malty. Rice, light malt, light zest, a touch of hops. It’s not light beer but it is close. It is really easy and drinkable.
Fun facts about Crispy Lager:
• Style: It is classified as “Lager – American” on Untappd.
• Price: C$16.85 for a sixer at VITI Wine & Lager in Vancouver. Vancouver is expensive! I should have checked for a cheaper store.
• Alcohol content: 4.3 percent ABV.
• Here’s the description from the website:
• The can said it is “brewed for” the Who Cares Brewing Company, but I can’t find out who really brews it.
• British Columbia has a 10-cent container deposit.
• As best as I could tell, alcohol sales in British Columbia are a lot less restricted than in Ontario. Though there is a government-owned and operated chain, BC Liquor Stores, it seemed alcohol was available in a variety of stores instead of specific, approved franchises.
• Here’s something I did not know, per Wikipedia: “In Canada, there is no federally defined age for legal alcohol purchase or consumption. Each province and territory is free to set its own drinking age” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_drinks_in_Canada). The drinking age in BC is 19.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C.
