Beer of the Weekend #1,119: Canoe Chase

The second and last beer from my Vancouver haul is Canoe Chase, brewed by Smugglers Trail Caskworks of Langley Township, British Columbia, Canada.

Canoe Chase

Serving type: 473 ml can. “25041” is printed on the bottom, but I am unsure if it is a freshness date.

Appearance: Pours a medium golden amber into my Number One Pint Glass. Buttery, dense, bubbly head settles evenly and slowly, leaving short trails along the glass.

Smell: I can smell it from an arm’s length away. Sharp citrus and hops. There are scents of grapefruit, orange or maybe tangerine, zest, and earthy hops.

Taste: Bitter, sharp, and citrusy. It is a pleasant, smooth, and subtle mélange. There are notes of grapefruit, orange or tangerine, caramel, zest, and earthy hop bitterness. The sharpness and bitterness even out as the pint warms.

Fun facts about Canoe Chase:

• Style: West Coast IPA.

• Price: C$19.45 at VITI Wine & Lager on Seymour Street in Vancouver, British Columbia.

• Alcohol content: 6.8 percent ABV.

• IBU: 53.

• Here is the description via the brewery website:

Inspired by a (probably) true story, this beer is named for a legendary escapade. 150 years ago, on the run from the British Army redcoats, a pair of gold thieves made their escape in the original Canadian getaway vehicle: a canoe. Incredibly, they out-paddled their pursuers and escaped up the Fraser River, proving that sometimes a wild risk pays off. In that spirit, we’ve dared to re-imagine the west coast IPA. Notes of bright citrus, passion fruit and mellow spruce shine through a base of moderate caramel malt. Perfectly balanced, full-flavoured, never bitter. Raise a glass to your latest escapade.

• Along with paying a 10-cent deposit on each can, I paid a 5-percent federal goods-and-services tax (GST), a 7-percent provincial sales tax (PST),  and a 10-percent British Columbia liquor tax (LIQTAX). I also was charged a dollar for a bag.

The tax numbers on the receipt are really weird and don’t make sense to me. The subtotal with the beer, deposits, and bag is C$38.30, the GST is C$1.85, the PST is C$0.06, and the LIQTAX is C$3.64. Why is the PST significantly less than the GST when the PST is 2 percent higher? What is being taxed and what is being excluded? I can’t figure it out.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
