Good Tunes: The Prodigy, 'Charly'

I listen to Vernon Kay’s “Dance Sounds of the 90s” show on BBC Radio 2 every now and then. Though Kay can be annoying, the tunes are usually pretty good. I highly recommend a listen.

A recent show was dedicated to the dance songs of 1991. I dismissed it at first but gave it a listen and am glad I did. Woooo, what a show! It features some good stuff, including The Prodigy’s debut single, “Charly,” which I had never heard before. (“This is from 1991?” I thought, impressed.)

The video is quite a time capsule. The sound, style, dancing, costumes, effects. It is really similar to this Altern 8 video, which was apparently from the same year.

Interestingly, a different version of “Charly” was included on The Prodigy’s first album. I prefer the single version.
