Beer of the Weekend #1,111: Irish Ale

The beer of the weekend last weekend was Irish Red, brewed by the Boulevard Brewing Company of Kansas City, Missouri.

Irish Red

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. “PLEASE ENJOY BY 10JUL2025” is printed on the label.

Appearance: Poured into a nonic pint glass. The color is a solid copper. Two fingers of dense, pillowy, bubbly head settles unevenly and leaves bubbly trails.

Smell: Caramel, earthy/rye spice that is metallic, and red licorice. It smells like a piece of toasted rye bread.

Taste: Smooth and muted, though not spicy or as metallic. Light caramel, toasted rye bread, chocolate, and a nice earthy bite. It is a touch nutty as well.

Fun facts about Irish Ale:

• Style: Irish red.

• Price: $10.39 for a sixer of 12-ounce bottles at Gary’s in Mount Vernon.

• Alcohol content: 5.8 percent ABV.

• IBU: 30.

• Color: Boulevard pegs the color at 51 EBC. I like how Boulevard notes the color on the beer’s webpage. It is interesting that they use EBC, though. EBC is the European color scale.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
