Beer of the Weekend #1,112: Flogging Molly

The beer of the weekend a weekend or so ago (the one before St. Patrick’s Day) was another rock-themed brew: Flogging Molly, brewed by House Divided Brewery of Ely, Iowa.

Flogging Molly

Serving type: 16-ounce can. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a nonic pint glass. The color is copper with a golden hue. Two fingers of off-white, bubbly, frothy head settles slowly.

Smell: Lovely caramel, toasted malt, light earthy spice, toffee, toasted bread, light esters. It reminds me of Millstream’s Oktoberfest.

Taste: Malty, red goodness. Carmel, toasted malt, earthy spice, toasted rye, toffee, and honey. The mouthfeel is a touch thin but it is damn good otherwise. Hats off to the brewer!

Fun facts about Floggy Molly:

• Style: Irish red.

• Price: $10.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: The can says 5.7 percent ABV but the brewery website says 5.2 percent ABV.

• IBU: 18.

• Much like other House Divided beers, this one has a rock-themed name: I assume it pays homage to the Celtic punk band Flogging Molly. (I planned to post the video to “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” but it is not a Flogging Molly song. The Dropkick Murphy’s sang it.)

The Quiet Man’s grade: A+.
