Beer of the Weekend #1,050: Odell Oktoberfest

The second märzen of this Oktoberfest weekend is Oktoberfest, brewed by the Odell Brewing Company of Fort Collins, Colorado.

Odell Oktoberfest

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “11/24/23” is written on the carrying box and can, so I assume that is the best-by or sell-by date.

Appearance: Poured into a stange. (Both of my stanges are getting a workout this weekend.) The color is golden amber. One and a half fingers of off-white, buttery, caramel-tinted, bubbly head pops away soon after the pour but not quickly.

Smell: Sweet, rich, and malty. Caramel, cherry licorice, and rye bread, especially the crust.

Taste: Much like the aroma, it is sweet, rich, and malty with lots of caramel. Toasted malt and rye bread (yum!) are also present. There has to be some kind of bittering element, but it is mostly masked by the sweetness.

Fun facts about Odell Oktoberfest:

• Style: Märzen.

• Price: $11.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 6.1 percent ABV.

• IBU: 19

• I really like the description via the brewery website:

There’s plenty to celebrate when fall arrives in Colorado. The warm days grow shorter, the cool shadows grow longer, and the aspens put on their golden, grand finale. Brewed with biscuity sweet Munich malts and spicy, herbal noble hops, our Oktoberfest is a reminder to stop and enjoy the show.

• This year’s Oktoberfest in Munich started on September 21 and runs through October 6.

• The name
Odell always makes me think of the Odell’s butter commercials played before movies in Iowa City when I was a kid: “Odell’s popcorn butter … served at this theater.”

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
