Beer of the Weekend #1,048: Uplift

The beer of the weekend is Uplift, brewed by the Confluence Brewing Company of Des Moines, Iowa.

Uplift

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “CANNED ON JUL/25/23” is written on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into my John’s pilsner glass. The color is medium honey amber. A finger of off-white, buttery, bubbly head leaves a bubbly skim.

Smell: A nice blend between pilsner and amber lager. The aroma is muted but there are light scents of light malt and caramel. There is also a touch of honey, and it has that Confluence scent, which I assume is the water.

Taste: Muted but also crushable. Much like the aroma, it is a tasty mix of pilsner and amber lager, though it is on the lighter side. There are flavors of light malt, caramel, a touch of cocoa, and honey. A bitter toasted character emerges as the beer continues to warm.

Fun facts about Uplift:

• Style: Confluence calls it Czech-style amber lager.

• Price: $11.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 5.4 percent ABV.

• Here is the description via the brewery website:

Real adversity takes ingenuity, determination and teamwork to make true progress, the kind America’s workforce is known for. But those hard-fought wins are often the most gratifying — because never giving up is how we lift each other up and overcome. Uplift is a tribute to that tenacious spirit — and our own contribution to hardships that too many Americans face: Cancer. We’re honored to join forces with the motivated folks at Stellar to raise funds for cancer research through the movement of Uplift. Well-balanced and complex, Uplift’s malty sweetness makes it rich and flavorful, while its smoothness and moderate bitterness keeps it refreshing and easy drinking. So, raise a glass — and your support — with us. Here’s to overcoming.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
