Beer of the Weekend #1,045: Redside Ale

I have two beers left from my summer 12-pack and I am going to take care of them this weekend.

The first beer of the weekend is Redside Ale, brewed by the Brightside Aleworks of Altoona, Iowa.

Redside Ale

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “04/14/23 #65” is written on the bottom shoulder.

Appearance: Poured into a nonic. The color is medium reddish amber. A finger and a half of light tan, dense, buttery head settles slowly.

Smell: It has been a long time since I smelled something like that! Caramel and malt with an earthy/metallic edge. It reminds me of first-generation craft beers before everyone started making IPAs.

Taste: Malty and balanced. Caramel is most noticeable. It is also sweet with a little cherry licorice. Toffee is also noticeable, and there is a nice but subtle earthy bitterness.

Fun facts about Redside Ale:

• Style: Irish red ale.

• Price: Unsure.

• Alcohol content: 6.2 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
