Beer of the Weekend #829: Space Rock

The second beer of the weekend is another beer from Short’s Brewing of Elk Rapids, Michigan: Space Rock.

The color is hazy, medium gold. A finger of white, bubbly, thick, almost meringue-like head dissipates slowly and unevenly, leaving a lot of lacing stuck to the glass. A catty aroma is noticeable after popping the cap. Floral hops and the catty scent dominate the aroma, but there are also scents of orange and zest. The beer’s webpage mentions dandelion leaf, and I will confirm that it does smell like dandelion. The mouthfeel is soft and creamy. A zesty, floral bitterness attacks the taste buds and lingers long after each sip. Lemon zest and orange are the most prominent flavors besides the bitterness. This is a tasty and aggressive pale ale.

Fun facts about Space Rock:

• Style: American pale ale.

• Price: I am not sure. My boss, who does not drink beer, graciously bought some beer to have in the fridge during my visit — “for the ambience” I think was how he said it — and Space Rock was one of those beers.

• Alcohol content: 5 percent ABV.

• IBU: 72.

• According to the beer’s label and webpage, Space Rock has been “proven to be gluten removed” since August 1, 2015.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
