Beer of the Weekend #536: New Glarus Apple Ale

Yesterday I took s short trip with my dad to see my grandma. Then we went to Wisconsin with my uncle. Needless to say, beer and cheese were procured.

The beer of the weekend is Apple Ale, brewed by the New Glarus Brewing Company of New Glarus, Wisconsin.

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is light, rusty-amber. A finger of eggshell-colored head dissipated quickly, leaving an even skim, spotted bubbles, and a ring around the edge.

Smell: A variety of pungent, freshly cut apples, a light dusting of cinnamon, and caramel. It actually smells a little like a caramel-covered apple. (Goddamn those things are good!) The aroma is very tart and there are also scents of muskmelon, strawberry rhubarb, and maraschino cherry.

Taste: Tasty and tart. It is more reminiscent of teeth-rotting Halloween candy than apple pie; it is like apple-flavored Laffy Taffy or Tootsie Fruit Rolls. The apple flavor itself is Goldilocks perfect: just right. It is not too overpoweringly tart. The apple pie is noticeable, mostly with cinnamon spice, but it eventually becomes too tart for that; the muskmelon, strawberry rhubarb, and maraschino cherry prove too strong.

Drinkability: I am not the biggest fan of fruit/vegetable beers, but this is damn good. It is not apple pie, but it is very flavorful and enjoyable. After a couple of these, I think I’ll need to call my dentist for a cleaning.

Fun facts about Apple Ale:

-Style: New Glarus calls it “Apple Ale.”

-Price: $9.49/four-pack at the Roelli Cheese Haus in Shullsburg, Wisconsin.

-Alcohol content: The New Glarus website does not say, but BeerAdvocate pegs the ABV at 4 percent.

-Description via the beer’s webpage:

Apple Ale sings with the fresh crisp taste of Apples. Our Brewmaster begins with a brown ale base employing Wisconsin farmed wheat and a blend of fresh picked apples. Our apple growing friends squeeze them especially for this brew.

Expect this Ale to pour a beautiful copper color. The fresh bouquet of Apple will rise to meet you even before the glass touches your lips. So be sure to sip slowly and enjoy the fruits of a Wisconsin Harvest.

The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
