Beer of the Weekend #224: Chocolate Stout

So the Cubs lost today. Boo hoo hoo. As everyone else was saying at the Deadwood, “One hundred sixty one games to go!”

Though “motor oil month” is technically over, I still have a craving for the dark stuff. So the beer of the weekend is Chocolate Stout, brewed by the Fort Collins Brewery of Fort Collins, Colorado.

Serving type: Six 12-ounce bottles. There is no freshness date on the label or bottle.

Appearance: Straight pour into a pint glass. The color is an almost opaque black; a little light passed through when I held it to a lamp. One finger of tan head developed and dissipated to leave a thin, bubbly lacing and ring around the edge.

Smell: Pretty weak. It is mostly cocoa, a little dark chocolate, mocha, vanilla, and caramel. It has a nice roasted character, but it blends well with the other aromas and does not dominate.

Taste: The roasted character shines through in the taste. Roasted dark chocolate, mocha, and a little caramel. In the end it leaves a hoppy bite lingering on the cheeks and tongue.

Drinkability: Straight forward and the mouthfeel is a little watered down. Decent stuff, but not extraordinary.

Fun facts about Chocolate Stout:

-Style: BA calls it American Stout.

-Price: $8.99/sixer at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.

-Alcohol content: BA says the ABV at 5.3 percent, but the Fort Collins website pegs it under 5 percent.

-Food pairings: BA suggests barbecue, buttery cheeses (Brie, Gouda, Havarti, Swiss), earthy cheeses (Camembert, Fontina), chocolate, beef, shellfish, smoked meat, game meat, and grilled meat.

-Man, I had way too much beer today.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
