Beer of the Weekend #97: 3 Horses Imported Lager Beer
I’m double dippin’ brew-wise this weekend, because I can.
The second beer this weekend is 3 Horses Imported Lager Beer brewed by the Bierbrouwerij de Drie Hoefijzers of Breda, The Netherlands. (However, I think that’s just a brewery in name. The real brewer, according to BeerAdvocate, is Brouweij de Oranjeboom of Breda, The Netherlands, the same brewer of BotW #92, Oranjeboom Premium Lager.)
3 Horses is the second of the three Dutch mystery lagers sold (in cans!) at Trader Joe’s. The last couple weeks I’ve drank PBR as a base lager.
Serving type: Six 16-ounce cans. There’s only a cryptic code printed on the bottom; no translatable born-on or freshness date that I can see.
Appearance: Poured a clear, clean gold. Pouring straight down into the glass — slowly — delivered two fingers of dense head that quickly dissipated to leave a ring around the outside.
Smell: It’s mostly adjunct grain, but there is a smooth floral scent, like hay, as well. It smells like a cross between a dirty Mexican lager and a high quality, barnyard German helles.
Taste: Dominated by corn grains, but, as with the scent, there’s nice barnyard malt presence that keeps it respectable.
Drinkability: It’s a basic lager, and very drinkable. It far surpasses my expectations. Seriously, any beer with horses in the name… The Great Cornholio bless thee.
Fun facts about 3 Horses:
-Price: I don’t remember exactly, but I think it was $5/sixer. Not bad.
-Serving temperature: 40-45ºF.
-Alcohol content: Unknown. It’s not on the can and it’s not listed on BA.
-Food pairings: BA recommends poultry, fish, and shellfish.
-Not much to report about 3 Horses. I’m not in the mood for research anyway. It’s time to drink.
