Beer of the Weekend #1,169: No Coast Oktoberfest
It’s that time of year again: time to bust out my stanges, use umlauts, and scour the beer shelves for märzen I have not tried before. They are getting harder and harder to find every year, especially those brewed locally, but I found one last week: Oktoberfest, brewed by the No Coast Beer Company of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Serving type: 16-ounce can. “CANNED ON 08/05/26” was printed on the bottom edge. (I assume it was supposed to be in the middle, but the alignment was off.)
Appearance: Poured into a stange. The color was dark honey/caramel color. Dense, buttery, light caramel colored head settles evenly and leaves a lot of foam trails.
Smell: Toasty with caramel. Earthy hops and some fleeting dark esters reminiscent of an apple or berry pie, and burnt sugar (which I suppose is just caramel). It smelled like an Oktoberfest beer.
Taste: Really toasted malt, reminiscent of brown ale. More esters, like cherry and berry, than caramel—at first, at least. Honey, brown sugar, and a touch of caramel. The flavors were on the muted side, but the hops and toasted malt really worked the taste buds and left a lasting aftertaste.
