Beer of the Weekend #1,116: A-OK IPA

I was north of the border for the annual conference last week and picked up a couple Canadian brews. But first, I need to work through a review backlog.

The last beer from my spring break haul was A-OK IPA, brewed by the Avondale Brewing Company of Birmingham, Alabama.

A-OK IPA

Oops! Forgot to take a pic with the full glass.

Serving type: 12-ounce can. There is no discernable freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into nonic. The color is hazy golden amber. A buttery, dense head settles slowly and evenly, leaving trails of foam stuck to the glass.

Smell: Tropical but not bursting or juicy. Grapefruit, pineapple, mango. It is a touch green and zesty. There are also scents of caramel and light honey.

Taste: The malts and hops are fightin’! It is bitter but also malty. It is not tropical and I suspect the can may be on the old side. Flavors of grapefruit, pineapple, and mango are noticeable but not prominent. Caramel, honey, and a touch of fleeting esters are also present. It leaves a lasting bitterness.

Fun facts about A-OK IPA:

• Style: Avondale calls it “Vacation Style IPA,” but the beer is classified as American IPA on BA.

• Price: $10.69 at Ship and Shore in Dauphin Island, Alabama.

• Alcohol content: 7.2 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
