Beer of the Weekend #1,115: Total Clarity

I watched the men’s national championship game on Monday and enjoyed another brew from my Dauphin Island mini haul: Total Clarity, brewed by the Chandeleur Island Brewing Company of Gulfport, Mississippi.

Total Clarity

Serving type: 12-ounce can. A code is printed on the label but there is nothing discernable as a freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a nonic. The color is hazy golden amber. A thick, off-white, billowy head settles slowly and leaves a web of foam trails stuck to the glass.

Smell: Sharp and Tang-like. It is a mélange of citrus. Tangerine, grapefruit, orange, honey, caramel, powdery sharpness, and red licorice.

Taste: It is malty and a touch green. It has a boozy edge. Caramel, zest, and powdery citrus, though it is muted compared to the aroma. Floral hops. It tastes a little like an Orange Julius. It evens out as the pint continues to warm.

Fun facts about Total Clarity:

• Style: New England IPA. It has been a long time since I saw that term.

• Price: $11.59 for a four-pack of 12-ounce cans at Ship and Shore in Dauphin Island, Alabama.

• Alcohol content: 8.3 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
