Beer of the Weekend #1,091: Council's Kölsch

The beer last weekend was surprisingly good for its age: Council’s Kölsch, brewed by the Full Fledged Brewing Company of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Council's Kölsch

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED 08/02/23” is printed on the label—which I did not see in the store. If I had, I probably would not have bought it.

Appearance: Poured into my 300 ml stange. The color is light gold with a chill haze. About two fingers of off-white, buttery, bubbly head leaves trails of foam.

Smell: Dry and malty. Light malt, honey, grass, a touch of earth, light lemon zest, and Cheerios.

Taste: Grassy with a zesty, earthy edge. Lemon zest, light malt, grass, and honey. It is tasty and dry.

Fun facts about Council’s Kölsch:

• Style: Kölsch.

• Price: $10.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at Benz Beverage Depot in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I have been disappointed the last couple times I’ve been there. The selection is nothing special and a lot of the stuff in their Iowa craft beer section is pretty old.

• Alcohol content: 4.8 percent ABV is printed on the can but 4.5 percent ABV is on the website.

• IBU: 12.

The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
