Beer of the Weekend #902: Flannel Friday

The beer of the weekend is another autumn-themed beer: Flannel Friday, brewed by the Harpoon Brewing Company of Boston, Massachusetts.

The color is golden amber. A finger of beige, buttery, bubbly head settles slowly and unevenly.

The aroma is toasty and malty. It is very enticing. There are scents of toasted malt, caramel, chocolate, and spice. There is also a touch of toffee.

The flavor is metallic and sharp at first, but it mellows and the malt comes through. The metallic bitterness dominates, lingering on the taste buds, but there are flavors of toasted malt, caramel, light chocolate, and spice. It’s been a long time since I drank a metallic beer like this. The label mentions citrus, but I don’t get any citrus in either the aroma or flavor.

Fun facts about Flannel Friday:

• Style: The brewery calls it “Hoppy Amber Ale.”

• Price: $9.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles at the New Pioneer Co-op in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 5.7 percent ABV.

• IBU: 35.

• Color: 35. I’m pretty sure this is the EBC measurement because 35 is way too high of an SRM for this beer. I really need to brush up on my beer measurements.

• Calories: 171 (estimate).

The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
