Beer of the Weekend #881: Hop Nosh Tangerine
The beer of the weekend is Hop Nosh Tangerine, brewed by the Uinta Brewing Company of Salt Lake City, Utah.
The color is lightly hazy golden amber. A finger of beige, tight, buttery head leaves a skim with thicker spots and a ring around the edge.
The aroma is (surprise, surprise) citrusy. Tangerine is prominent, but there are also scents of floral hops and tropical fruit, mostly pineapple and grapefruit. It has a malt creaminess, too. The aroma is light but not weak.
The first sip is interesting: It is a discordant mélange. The second and third sips are much the same way, so it is not the taste buds adjusting. It is a combination of citrus, floral hops, bitterness, a little pine, and light malt. It is smooth, creamy, and bitter. It slowly evens out, though. The citrus is sharp at times. The tangerine starts to shine as the beer warms to room temperature. Ruby red grapefruit emerges, too.
Fun facts about Hop Nosh Tangerine:
• Style: American IPA.
• Price: $9.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City.
• Alcohol content: 7.3 percent ABV. I did not know that until now. I avoid beers heftier than 7 percent ABV usually, and I passed up a beer with a similar ABV to buy Hop Nosh Tangerine, so this one snuck past me.
• IBU: 82.
• Color: 14 SRM.
• Uinta recommends serving in a tulip. Oops!
The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
