Beer of the Weekend #1,165: Logan's Run

This was the last week of summer vacation for my wife and kids, so I tipped back a high-ABV brew mid-week: Logan’s Run, brewed by the Confluence Brewing Company of Des Moines, Iowa.

Logan's Run

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “Canned on JUL/16/26” was printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a shaker pint glass. The color was lighter to medium hazy amber. There was lots of dense, off-white (almost amber-tinted), buttery head, which dissipated slowly and left foam stuck to the glass.

Smell: Whoa! Juicy, tropical, dank. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple, a touch of caramel, and peach.

Taste: Oooo! Tasty! Balanced, though maltier than the aroma. Caramel, sweetness. Smooth and creamy. Citrus and tropical flavors emerge late after the dregs were poured in. Orange, grapefruit, not much pineapple, more pit fruit. The alcohol was well masked, though slightly noticeable.

Fun facts about Logan’s Run:

• Style: Triple IPA—a style I tend to steer clear of because of the higher ABV.

• Price: Unsure. The Librarian bought it for me to have at Sunday dinner.

• Alcohol content: 10 percent ABV.

• Here is the story of the beer, painstakingly rekeyed from the label because it is nowhere to be found online:

One of the great pleasures of brewing beer for a living is seeing the joy that it can bring to others. Everyone has their own great beer memories, specific brands or batches or brews that just stick with them over time. For my good friend, Logan, one of our early Extinction Events was one of those standouts. After several years of good-natured badgering, we finally acquiesced to his demands that we brew another Citra and Idaho 7 hopped Hazy IPA. We brewed that batch for Logan on our Pilot System, a small batch Triple IPA named Logan’s Run. Logan loved it, but it turned out that a lot of other folks did too. Smooth, slightly sweet, citrus-forward with notes and aromas of passion fruit and peaches, it’s an enjoyable beer. We wanted to spread that joy father than we could with just a single small batch, so we brewed it again, and more of it. That first run was for Logan, but this run’s for you. We hope it brings you as much joy as it does us!

I love that Confluence still includes the story about each beer on their labels, but I wish they would post them somewhere online, too.

• Here is the description on UnTappd: “A Triple Hazy IPA with Citra, Idaho 7. It’s like a fruit salad in a glass. A little piney rosin, soft, pillowy malt bill. It’s a 23rd Century flavor but available here, today, in the Confluence Brewing taproom.”

• The reference to the 23rd century is a nod to the film
Logan’s Run. I have seen bits and pieces of it, and mostly recall the fight in the ruined Senate chamber near the end. It was often on Encore when I was a kid.

The Quiet Man’s grade: A.
