Beer of the Weekend #1,164: Gold Coin

The beer last weekend was a local staple I have neglected to review for a long time: Gold Coin, brewed by Backpocket Brewing of Waterloo, Iowa.



Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED ON 06/17/26” is printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a stange. (I was experimenting with the glassware.) The color was hazy light gold. A fluffy, off-white, buttery head slowly popped away.

Smell: Light, malty, and zesty. Light malt, corn/rice adjunct, lemon zest, a touch of hay/grass.

Taste: Dry and light with light zest and esters. Very light and drinkable. Light malt, corn/rice adjunct (probably corn), lemon zest, and light strawberry and apple.

Fun facts about Gold Coin:

• Style: Helles is written on the can, but so is “blonde lager,” which is listed as the style on the brewery website. I suppose helles is blond.

• Price: $10.99 for a sixer of 12-ounce cans at Gary’s in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

• Alcohol content: 5.2 percent ABV.

• IBU: 15.
