Beer of the Weekend #1,135: Westoberfest
This realization blew my mind last week: I have never reviewed a beer from West O Beer. How could that be possible?
Well, I remedied that last Friday with the beer of the weekend: Westoberfest, brewed by West O Beer of West Okoboji, Iowa.

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “PACKED ON 08/01/25” was printed on the label.
Appearance: Poured into a stange. The color was medium caramel. A caramel-tinted, dense, bubbly, buttery head dissipated slowly.
Smell: Lots of caramel. Rich. Chocolate, nuts, grassy hops, a touch of rye. Toasted pumpernickel (yum!).
Taste: Smooth and very toasty. Caramel, toasted pumpernickel, chocolate, sharp earthy hops, a touch metallic, a touch of grass. The definition of balanced. Damn good beer!
Fun facts about Westoberfest:
• Style: Märzen.
• Price: I forgot to get the receipt again, but I think it was around $12 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans at Gary’s in Mount Vernon.
• Alcohol content: 5 percent ABV.
• IBU: 25.
• Could this be my new favorite märzen? Possibly. I have not had Millstream’s in a long time (I hope it hasn’t changed).
• I parked in West O’s parking lot but did not go inside. It was back in the summer of 2020 when The Foxy Lady and I camped in the Okoboji area, probably at Gull Point State Park. I wanted to check out West O but, as seemed to be the case just about everywhere in the area, nobody was wearing masks, so we decided to leave.
• That was the first time I had ever been to the Okoboji area. It didn’t do it for me and I don’t feel the desire to ever go back. I liked Spirit Lake, though. It was not as touristy and crazy.
• While drinking a Westoberfest, The Foxy Lady jokingly asked if I was going to drop West High references. I wasn’t planning to, but the name Westoberfest reminds me of the “Wuck Fest” shirts people wore in high school. I remember a teacher confiscating them or making people turn them inside-out at the City-West football game my freshman year. Wuck fest.
The Quiet Man’s grade: A+.
